Description
Etching on parchment by Winslow Homer - 1887. Unlike civil clock bells, the strikes of the marine bell do not accord to the number of the hour. Instead, there are eight bells, one for each half-hour of a four-hour watch. In the age of sailing, watches were timed with a 30-minute hourglass. As these men finish their watch, you can feel the damp rain and humidity from the approaching storm as these men take readings. The Newwwman Dated series consists of 19th and 20th Century American Artists whose works are no longer protected by copyright and are in the public domain as well as items that may still be copyrighted but being used in a manner consistent with Fair Use under U.S. copyright law (Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act).
