Description
Oil on canvas by Winslow Homer - 1872. Children were depicted by many artists and writers during the 1870s as embodiments of innocence and the promise of Americas future. An image such as this one would have evoked nostalgia for the nations agrarian past, as the population shifted to cities and the little red one-room schoolhouse faded from memory. Released from their lessons, eight exuberant boys engage in a spirited game. Their bare feet signal the freedom of childhood, and the game, which requires teamwork, strength, and calculation, may have alluded to the challenges faced by the reunited republic. The Newwwman Dated series consists of 19th and 20th Century American Artists who's works are no longer protected by copyright and are in the public domain as well as items that may still be copyrighted but being used in a manner consisntent with Fair Use under U.S. copyright law (Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act).
